In an SLA, compensation is tied to how well the service meets agreed targets. Payments can be adjusted based on performance through three mechanisms: service credits, bonuses, or penalties. If the service falls short of targets (for example, lower uptime or slower response times), the provider may give service credits or incur penalties. If performance exceeds targets, bonuses or additional rewards might be paid. These adjustments usually appear as credits against future invoices or as refunds, and they help align incentives so the service provider strives to meet or beat the promised levels.

This isn’t about fixed payments regardless of quality, nor is it only about procurement planning. Credits aren’t a blanket replacement for all payment terms; they’re part of a broader framework that includes the usual payment provisions, often with caps and exclusions for things like planned maintenance.
